notes from the edge - 17

Although still chilly, yesterday had all of the hallmarks of spring. It is amazing what a return of bright sunny days can do for the spirit. The workload has not changed, I still have all of the pressures of the courses, but I feel fantastic! So fantastic that I took last night off from studying/writing papers/doing readings to go to see Sherlock Holmes at the student run cinema. Aside from the fact that it only cost $4.20 (which in itself is a celebration) I loved the film. It was everything it should have been, fast-paced, engaging, gritty (it made London so dark and foreboding) and entertaining. Here's hoping that I can continue to take some time to enjoy, I was able to come back home (well, London, Ontario home) and get more work done in a very productive manner. I think I had forgotten about balance entirely.

notes from the edge - 16

Lest some of you think I have given up on my adventure into the MLIS world, take heart, I just took a break from blogging about it. The first week break was due to Research Week, where I was researching what feeling well rested was like. It was blissful. The next break was because of trying to finish up some papers so that I could enjoy Super Conference (I paid for the blissful feeling from Research Week). I truy enjoyed Super Conference!

Visit the above link to view and download a ppt which you may find useful in any presentations you might be making or that others might be making.  It illustrates extremely well how the databases can be used to best advantage in many different situations.

Monday Molly Musings - March 1, 2010 - Super Superconference!

Hello all. Sorry I didn't post last week. The combination of my literature review deadline and finishing my OLA presentations (in addition to security issues on this URL) prevented me from posting.
This weekend, I attended the Ontario Library Association's Superconference. It was great. I wrote a summary of the three days for my colleagues but I thought the file you'd be more interested in would be a piece of my presentation, "Twilight and the School Library".

World Bank Scholarship for 2010. Apply now.

In 1987, the World Bank, with funding from the Government of Japan, established the World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (WBGSP) for graduate studies in subjects related to economic development. Each year, the Program awards scholarships to individuals from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies at renowned universities throughout member countries of the Bank.
Now in its 23d year, the Regular Program has awarded 3,153 scholarships, selected from 58,944 applicants. In addition, 1,226 scholarships have been awarded in the various JJ/WBGSP Partnership Programs for a total of 4,379 awards.

GUIDE ON APPLY FOR Post Graduate SCHOLARSHIPS.

In today’s world employers receive about 200-500 applications for each scholarship opening. They just received a bunch of dates and numbers and little personal information of candidates. Therefore is it very difficult to judge a potential candidate without having interview and personal discussion. But calling for interview is expansive and it’s not possible to call every candidate for the Interview. Therefore it is very important that your scholarship application should stand out exceptionally in the crowd and get selected for the next stage. Scholarship-Positions.com is trying to provide helpful tips about how to apply for scholarships.

Learning Centre at Library and Archives Canada to be Eliminated

As a teacher-librarian I am sad and worried. At a time when cuts to school library budgets make it increasingly difficult to access relevant and commercial-free information, I read that the Government of Canada is cutting funding to the Learning Centre of the Library and Archives Canada (See the Ottawa Sun http://www.ottawasun.com/news/columnists/earl_mcrae/2010/01/19/1253...). I am afraid of losing access to valuable tools for promoting student awareness of Canadian heritage and for developing a wide variety of literacy and research skills that are the foundations of academic and professional success. The resources accessed through learning centre programs such as "Lest We Forget" help students to make personal connections to history that lead to meaningful learning.

Monday Molly Musings - February 15, 2010 - Why I Can't Watch the Olympics and Viral Marketing

Latter topic first: one of my "new fave" authors asked her blog readers to post this link - I'm not sure if it will work, but here goes:

In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other.  Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack.  And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.
