Economic Downturn = Increasing Library Use?
It is hard to go through one day without someone mentioning the failing economy and its negative effects. Then I came across a podcast titled, “Libraries Shine in Tough Economic Times” by the National Public Radio (NPR) and I was intrigued. I listened to the short 4 minute interview with the Director of Boyd County Public Library and began to realize that libraries in the US have started to notice a large increase in overall use, including checkouts, computer use and program attendance. You can listen to it yourself at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=93041368. This then had me thinking, ‘Hey! A bad economy equals a greater need for my industry!’ And so, the economic downturn did not seem so bad after all. I think it is great that people are starting to reacquaint themselves with the libraries they used as kids and that others are willing to learn about them. After all, all our resources are free! It simply no longer makes sense to pay close to $5 to rent a movie when one can be borrowed for free and the loan period is even longer! It will be very interesting to see Canadian statistics, as well. In the meantime, as the library now shines, I am happily basking in their glow.
