Dare I Say Children Librarians are Happier!
I just finished reading the article, “How Happy Are You” by Eva and McCormack and I just want to say that I think being a librarian is the best job in the world! This question of happiness actually popped into my mind as I was in library school, when deciding which area of librarianship I wanted to pursue. And this is how I came to the conclusion that I wanted to be a children’s librarian. I am the type of person that needs instant gratification. I can do an amazing job, as long as I know that someone somewhere is appreciating it, along the way. Everyday I am continuously satisfied with what I do because children do not lie and because parents are so interested in their children’s lives that constructive criticism or positive praise comes often. Therefore, I kind of always know where I stand. More so than if I waited for a performance appraisal. And thus, I may venture into saying that perhaps Children’s Librarians are happier than others because we receive constant feedback. Maybe that explains why we’re always a bit more chipper and excited all the time?? In the end, though, it is still our job and how happy can we TRULY be, knowing that whatever we’re doing is in order to survive in today’s capitalist society. I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on whether you think different areas of librarianship provide greater happiness than others.
