Build on the bite hype!

In order to take advantage of the Twilight fever that has struck our school, I purchased two Twilight posters - one of Edward and one of Jacob. I then posted them in the window of my library with the following sign.

Would you like a chance to win one of these posters?
Give Mrs. Robertson a "byte" and you'll receive a draw ticket for the posters.
Listen to announcements for more information.

Meanwhile, I did a couple announcements each day, saying, "Book bytes are coming" just to get the students excited.

Then, on Monday, I explained that a book byte is a sound file that specifically talks about books.
If they record a 60 - 90 second mini book talk with me (I use the open source program, Audacity) then I give them a draw ticket.
I then send the audio file to their LA teacher, who plays it for the rest of the class at the start of their class.

The response has been great... I have students talking about books, and I've built on the Twilight hype.
Once a title has been used, another student can not do their "byte" about that book. My other requirement is that the book they do their byte on has to be one that is available in our library.
It's been a lot of fun, and has kids pretty excited. Students who wouldn't normally talk about books do because they want a chance to win one of the posters. Students who would love to talk about books anyway, now can pretend they're only doing it because they want the poster.

"baits" & "bytes"

Now that sounds like a lot of fun. Once you get them turned on to the reading, you can start to build strategies to help them with deeper critical understanding of the concepts and themes in the books through the use of other online databases like Novelist or print organizers, etc. You can't go deeper if they aren't there to begin with though, can you? So I guess it's a good thing you've found just the right "bait" to get those "bytes"
