Try Having Some Fun

What happened to having a little fun? I thought fun and social relationships make us live longer? Is this why librarians only last ‘til…well, nevermind. It seems that no matter how hard I try, I still continue to feel the gap between old and new; between keeping things the same and inevitable change. It’s so pronounced in every branch I go, that I’m almost starting to think it’s a by product of where we live. People aren’t as friendly in this town and there’s definitely an air of individualism that I tend to not find when I travel outside. So is it the librarians who are stopping me from having a little fun at work or our city’s culture? Maybe I’m thinking too deeply into this or maybe I’m just the symptom of a larger problem. I think it’s great to play games in the library with our patrons or to talk about something that’s happening outside the four walls…but get this…I was told ‘it has to relate to books somehow.’ Cue me falling off my chair. Books? What are those again? Now if I was told my programs need to relate to literacy or reading development, ok fine, I might agree, but BOOKS? REALLY? Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE books and I’m constantly reading them, but I’m also constantly having a life outside of them and I don’t see anything wrong with that, so why can’t the library have a life outside of books too? I will not, I repeat, will not make anything I do relate simply to books because that is like expecting dinosaurs to be outside. Hmmm maybe I should look out my window…in this town, it seems anything’s possible.

Books? really? I know we wor

Books? really? I know we work for the same library system, and most of what I do has little to do with books, and much to do with cultivating the library as a community space. For example, I run a knitting club, which brings together young people who are bad at knitting but good at English, with old people who are good at knitting, but bad at English. The products of speaking English and knitting are donated to Sick Kids hospital. Maybe every millionth week a couple of knitting books or magazines will get checked out, but I am pretty sure that most of the club members can't read a knitting pattern without my help. But everyone comes to the library and HAS FUN... The other strand of your comment: Toronto is a very unfriendly place, and I firmly belive that 95% of people who come from somewhere else would agree with that. But 95% of the people who use this library branch would agree that IT is a VERY friendly place. But then, most of us here, staff and patrons, come from somewhere else.......
