notes from the edge - 25
So, the second term begins. This will feel significantly different from the previous term. First term you go through the classes en masse, so to speak. Except for those students who choose to do the degree part-time, everyone in the cohort has the same courses, the same assignments and the same due dates. Now we have signed up for courses that are of particular interest to us, and there are people in the classes that I do not know and have never seen before. While this is both an opportunity to meet new people, it is also a bit of a set back in that the continuity of people is different, the support in similar experience will be lacking. There was comfort in having a group of people that you knew very well all going through the same thing.
I started out walking to school this morning, but the weather was not cooperative and the bus was coming while I was passing a bus stop, so I thought I would grab the bus the rest of the way. Thought, but could not execute, as the bus just blithely passed the dozen or so people at the stop. It is half an hour between buses, I could not possibly get to class on time with the bus. So I continued walking. When I got to a cross street, and another route, a bus came along. I got on and when I inquired about the actual route, I got yelled at by the driver. I am thinking some people did not have their wheaties this morning.
My first course this morning was on storytelling. I am hoping this will be my relax and enjoy it course, my entire family is a storytelling one, and I have grown up learning how to tell a tale to captivate an audience. Time will tell, but I have high hopes for this one. The rest of my courses are less entertaining and more intense. I have a management course (required), Strategic Planning, Marketing and Public Relations and Web Design. I should have a good idea of the pace and pressure by Friday, we should have all of the assignments in hand by then.
I feel so lucky to have gotten all of the courses that I wanted. Not so for others, it turns out. In fact, one of my classmates only got 2 of the courses she wanted, and it looks like she will be taking only 4 courses in total. Sometimes, in my opinion, you have to relax the rules and allow a few more people in a course if that is what they are really passionate about. I hope she gets what she wants out of this.
Off to purchase my textbooks now. Unfortunately, this term there will be costs in that direction.
