Underemployed, week 1

One week ago my job in a consumer-health library in a hospital was eliminated as a result of corporate restructuring. Well, one of my jobs. But my other job (in a public library) is insufficient to live on, so: underemployed. I figure about 20% employed, roughly, depending on how you calculate it.

I loved that job. It was interesting, and let me really help people. But now it's gone. So, now what?

Well I have some HR consultations to help prepare me for the job hunt. I have the various LIS job-posting boards.

I'm also in a very privileged position for someone looking for work: I have another job, so I have some income; I don't have any debts to pay off; I have a place to live for very little money; I have very few bills; I have a significant emergency fund and severance; I am willing and able to relocate. It would be hard to be in a better place for job-searching than the one I am in. Unless one didn't actually have to work and/or one enjoyed the job-hunt process.

So why am I writing about it, and specifically why am I writing about it here?

Well, I used to write a lot, but haven't in the past few years, so it's something I'd like to get back to. And I can't say I'd be sad if some people from Library Land gave me sympathy and encouragement. So why not here?

Currently: resume is undergoing a major reworking, "personal assessments" etc., keeping an eye on postings.

And now it's time to go get ready for my other job.
