e-books can address climate change?

I wouldn't normally repost a list-serv message here, but I think this is really important information, especially for those libraries considering e-book reader lending programs.

According to a fascinating report from the Cleantech Group, called The Environmental Impact of Amazon’s Kindle, one e-Book device on average can displace the buying of about 22.5 physical books per year, and thus deliver an estimated savings of 168 kg of CO2 per year.

Internet Access for Youth - Unfiltered Public Computers

We are working on revising our internet policy. We are wondering what
policies other public libraries with unfiltered internet access have
in place for 10-12 year old youth.

Currently we allow these youth to be in the library without their
parents, but do not allow them use of the computers without their
parents being in the library with them. We are considering revamping
our policy to allow these youth to obtain parental/guardian permission

Library career research

Hello,

I am considering applying to Western for the MLIS program, but I want to know more about the types of jobs I could get with the degree to see if being a librarian is right for me. I thought volunteering at Superconference might be a good start but is there somewhere else I could try volunteering? I am in Toronto if that helps. I was also wondering if anyone knows whether a public or academic library might allow me to come in and job shadow someone for day.

Hello,

I work for 3M Canada in library systems and I am looking for some honest feedback about your experiences with our company, our equipment and how willing, or reluctant, your library is to work with 3M Canada.

If you want to contact me with any specific questions feel free to email me at jromero3@mmm.com or visit our website at www.3m.com/canada/library

Donation of Books for overseas

Hi,

Our teen advisory group would like to donate children's books to be sent overseas.

My boss and I are realistic. There is not much money for this type of thing in today's economy. Every group I check out is looking for cash which is easier for them to handle.

The kids are really sold on doing something for children in Africa, particularly.
They are also doing the net campaign and clean water.

OLA 2010-2015: Strategic Planning

OLA is currently working on a strategic plan for 2010-2015. You can find more about the process at
http://www.accessola.com/ola/bins/content_page.asp?cid=3410
OLA wants as much participation as possible in this process.
How about having a conversation here, on OLA's Facebook discussion area, and by using #OLASP on Twitter to send your thoughts about the challenges to libraries and their staff over the next 3-5 years, the "association of the future", and of programs or services important to you from the association in the next few years.

Public computer management

Hello, we are looking for a public computer management system.
We have seen many solutions but we are not sure what would be the best.

So far we have:

Comprise (not sure of the web site)

We know that SmartGuard is installed in about 50 libraries in the Quebec region. But we have no statistics about Comprise.

Some of you have used Smartguard before?
Do you have any other recommendation?

Volunteer Opportunities

Hello, I am currently enrolled at Seneca College in the Accelerated Library Technician Program. I am living in Toronto (North York), and I am wondering if anyone would be aware of any volunteer opportunities at Conferences, Workshops, etc. Unfortunately right now, I am looking for a short commitment, as I am enrolled in the accelerated program, and have 6 courses.
Thanks for your help :)

Business & Legal Reference Titles

The Peterborough Public Library has subscribed to a number of CCH and Canada Law Book items for a number of years (ex. Canadian Labour Law Reporter, Canadian Goods and Services Tax Reporter). We find these items are rarely used and are quite costly. I'm wondering if other medium-sized public libraries subscribe to these types of items? If not, where do you direct your patrons if they need this type of information? i.e.
